New inland dive site opens
As one dive site closes, another opens. Buckland Lake near Cliffe in Kent has opened and will offer divers in the South an alternative place to dive following the closure of Horsea Island in July.
The old chalk quarry was flooded just over 40 years ago and has now become a haven for wildlife. Underwater attractions such as an airplane and boat have been placed at varying depths accessible to all levels of qualifications, and new attractions are going to be added in the very near future.
The old quarry train is still there but is proving to be elusive and has yet to be found. There are two tunnels that are currently being checked to see if they are safe for divers to enter.
Steve and Lyn of Polaris Scuba will be responsible for the dive operation at the lake and have provided a classroom, changing rooms and toilets. A number of training platforms will also be placed around the 15m deep lake, along with a pontoon for divers to enter the water. A safety boat and oxygen will be on-site at all times.
